Position Overview
The National University of Lesotho is inviting applications from qualified professionals for the position of Director Legal Services. This is a high-level strategic role reporting directly to the Vice-Chancellor, primarily responsible for providing legal advice, managing litigation, ensuring compliance, and overseeing all legal matters across the University.
This is a fixed-term contract for a period of three (3) years, with attractive remuneration based on qualifications and experience.
Key Responsibilities

Lead and manage the Legal Services Department

Offer legal counsel on strategy, governance, compliance, employment law, real estate, student issues, and collaborations
-
Represent the University in legal actions, negotiations, and court cases
-
Interpret, draft, and revise contracts, policies, statutes, and regulations
-
Serve as Chief Compliance and Ethics Officer
-
Identify and mitigate legal risks and oversee external legal counsel where necessary
-
Provide legal input on strategic decisions and institutional planning

Supervise departmental performance management
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

LLM Degree

10 years of continuous legal practice
-
At least 5 years in a managerial role
-
Admitted Legal Practitioner under Lesothoโs Legal Practitioners Act (1983)
-
Holder of a valid practicing certificate
-
Experience with contract law, risk mitigation, and labour law training
-
Must submit a valid police clearance certificate
Desirable (Added Advantage)

Experience handling legal matters in Higher Education
-
Previous legal advisory role at an academic institution

Sound knowledge of Lesothoโs legal system and regulatory landscape

Proven policy development and strategic planning experience

Strong negotiation and interpersonal skills

Capacity to multitask, manage complex projects, and meet deadlines

Ethical integrity, confidentiality, and professional judgment

Tech-savvy and comfortable using digital tools for legal documentation
